RKJ is a great voiceover. He has hands like leather. Like the sea, he does not suffer fools galdly. He’s also a great character. if anyone knows how dangerous the sea is, it will be him. His latest book opens with a punishing chapter of him holding onto the table in his cabin as his Yacht rode out the waves on his last single-handed round-the-world journey. Sailors, Seamen, Yachtsmen, will love this.
My family come from Aberdeen Trawler Skippers. As a boy, my father used to see them bobbing around in 60 foot waves trying to get into the safety of harbour in winter. The one day he remembers is the day a trawler stopped bobbing just outside the harbour.
The Merchant Navy were the unsung heroes of the last war. Ships were blown up, and others rarely stopped for survivors for fear of being torpedoed. A few years ago, we stood outside Aberdeen Harbour in a gale in January nearly getting blown off our feet. The sea was as rough as this. Forty foot waves battered the lightouse at the end of the pier, and the whole sea up to the horizon was a surf of white foam like I’ve never seen.
To anyone who has a love or attachment to the sea, this will undoubtedly resonate.
Evocative and direct, clear message. Love the commercial even if the claim that people would starve without ships and seafarers is a bit suspect, isn’t it? Has farming been abolished?
Really nice ad.

My only criticism is “what do you want me to do?”
You highlight the issue, but don’t say what you want me to do.
I presume you do want me to do something. Otherwise, it’s just an interesting piece of information delivered in an entertaining way.
