Well...right now we're reacting both as individuals and as part of a group. One person posts, other people filter it and respond to it, so that my reaction to the first post is influenced by the second. And my post is influenced, consciously and unconsciously, by how I think the group might perceive it, which affects the next reader/participant, and so on.

This isn't just a web thing. That Kitchener poster would struggle these days - see how those David Cameron posters are being graffitied and publicly ridiculed, for example.

Paul K,
We're talking about the art of communicating WITH not
whom we are communicating TO, and the response.

Can I humbly disagree?

Try sitting in a cinema when a good ad comes on. People laugh together, nudge each other, discuss it. The audience reacts together.

Try being in a football stadium when a crap ad comes onto the screen. A celebrity the fans don't like. They will actually start chanting, "Fu*k offf Rooney" or whatever. They incite each other. A group response spreads between them. The audience reacts together.

So there ARE circumstances in which you are communicating to a crowd of dozens, even thousands - and where the reaction of your neighbours tempers your own response.

It is indeed a great art to produce a piece of mass communication, and yet make the viewer feel like you are speaking to them and them alone.
If, however, you are advertising on certain Freeview channels the chances are you are really only speaking to one person anyway.
I have had to do certain online executions where the audience was probably smaller than that.
